UK1999 #12 Sirmione & Lago di Garda
Date: 6/21/99
As it turns out, the Russian Consulate cannot get us tickets for La Scala, it is
completely sold out. There are only door tickets which sell for $1000/person.
Instead of heading for Milano we decided to leave the coast, drive north past La
Spezia, Parma, Cremona and Breschia to Sirmione. Luckily I found their phone
number on the PalmPilot from 2 years ago and got a reservation. It took us only
3 hours and we were glad we did it. It is at the tip of a long slender strip of
land that juts into the lake from the southern shore. Just a beautiful place.
The restaurant we loved last time (Valentino's) was of course chiuso a lunedi
(closed Mon) but we tried Pace's and it was also very good. The greatest
displays of Italian gelatis tempt you as you walk back to your room. A nice run
around the peninsula in the morning and we are off to Milano and back to some
serious business - training 15 surgeons about phakic IOLs.
Looking back from the hotel, along the peninsula to the mainland.
