UK1999 #16 Cernobbio to Lucerne
Date: 7/3/99
We had our last pizza in Cernobbio. Before we ate we stopped in the English Pub
next door which was completely empty. We asked why it was so tranquile (quiet)
and he said it would be busier later. After dinner we returned and there was a
crowd of two people. Reminded us of the Lion.
Mixed feelings about leaving Italy. Drove from Como to Lugano but entering
Switzerland we had to buy a highway sticker good for 1 year for 40 CHF ($30).
Arrived in Lugano and met up with the Swiss banker, Pierluigi, for lunch and
then headed for Lucerne, where I had taken the train to in 97 to give some
lectures.
But first you have to go through the St. Gothard Tunnell which is 17 Km long (10
miles). 15 minutes driving through solid rock is a little unnerving after the
Mount Blanc accident. After that there is one more about 6 miles long. The Alps
are spectacular once you come out of the ground. After we arrived we were lucky
and got the very last lakeside room at the Grand Hotel National, recommended by
Dr. Urs Thomann, who lives here.
After an exhilarating run along the lake we drove to Horw where we ate a
fantastic meal at the Waldhaus (rec by Urs). The views and the evening outside
were incredible. Beautiful spot in the world (in summer).
Will have lunch with Urs tomorrow and then off to Basel and northwest to Calais.
From hotel room overlooking Lake Lucerne and the Alps.
